In the Coast of Bays region, the communications infrastructure upgrade to digital was completed in January 2002. The entire region now has a communications system operating over a fibre optic infrastructure and fully digital switching system.  Cell phone service is available in the region through cellular sites at St. Alban's, Hermitage and Harbour Breton and at Gull Lake on the Bay D'Espoir Highway.

The increased bandwidth allows Aliant to offer a range of optional features to its phone service and local access to the Sympatico Internet service via a 56K Flex service.
