Education

In terms of post-secondary education, 19.6% of the zone's population has attained a post-secondary certificate, trade, diploma or degree (Statistics Canada).

Public schools in the region offer a high quality of academic programs of study. These schools are fully equipped with modern sports facilities, technological equipment, Internet access and library facilities. In total there are 10 public schools in the region.

Schooling from the primary grade through grade 12 is free and attendance is compulsory. Busing is provided for all students in need of this service. Total enrollment for all schools in 1998-99 was 1720 with 144.5 teacher units.

The Baie Verte-Central-Connaigre School Board administers all the public schools within the region, with the exception of St. Anne's School, administered by the Conne River Indian Band Government, and Holy Cross in St. Alban's which is administered by a community board of directors.

The School Board also offers four Distance Education Programs whereby those individuals have access to advanced education courses. These programs are offered through the schools at Gaultois, Rencontre East, McCallum and Hermitage with teleconferencing equipment.

St. Anne's School in Conne River is the only native school in Newfoundland. This school incorporates the Mi'Kmaw traditions, culture and language within the curriculum.
