Natural Resources

Forestry

The Coast of Bays region's natural environment is one of its greatest strengths. Forestry has traditionally been a major source of employment for residents of the region and still continues to be an important employer today. The abundance of hardwood and softwood stands in the area has the potential to supply top-quality raw material for value-added manufacturing enterprises.

The Balsam Fir Sites in the area have nearly a 100% rate of regeneration, and the region is one of only a few places in the province where Eastern White Pine can still be found.

Currently there are commercial mills operating in the Coast of Bays region who are involved in primary production. The annual harvest production for the past few years is one (1) million board feet. Because there are no major industrial operators in the area, approximately 108,150 hectares of vast uncleared land is available. The Coast of Bays ongoing silviculture initiatives ensure a sustainable resource for future development and profitability.

Agri-foods

With increasing demand for cultural, health and speciality foods, the Coast of Bays' vast resources provide a natural advantage for becoming an important player in the food industry. Along with abundant animal life, the many barrens and marshes of the region hold a rich harvest of wild berries for the making of jams, jellies and wines to please the palate. Within the region there is approximately 500 acres of land available for agriculture. Local topsoil is among the best in the Province and as a result crop and livestock production can thrive here.

Mining

Initial exploration conducted in the region has revealed prime quality stone. Prospecting is still in its early stages and much more exploration is required, however results are promising. With Pink Granite and gold deposits known to exist, interest in staking claims is steadily rising.
