Hydroelectricity

The vast network of rivers and lakes in the Coast of Bays covers some 6,051 square kilometers. The region has one of the largest hydroelectric stations in Eastern Canada. The hydro generating station at Bay D'Espoir holds seven generating units with a total out put of 604 MW, which produces more than 2,657 Gigawatt hours of electrical energy annually.

The Bay d'Espoir Hydro Generating station is a major employer within the Coast of Bays region, employing approximately 80 people.

Additionally, generating stations at Granite Canal (224 Gwh annually) and the Upper Salmon (572 Gwh annually), deep in the interior on the Bay D'Espoir watershed,  bring the watersheds total annual generation capacity to 3,453 Gwh.

The remote communities of Gaultois and Rencontre East are connected to the island power grid while McCallum is supplied by Diesel Hydro Electricity.
