Introduction:    The initial mortality retrieval project plan, that was considered, consisted of purchasing two nets of different styles from British Columbia; both equipped to remove morts from the surface. These nets, of Scottish and B.C. design, would then be used by the growers to determine which model worked best. Meanwhile, Newfoundland Aqua Services (NAS) and Long Island Resources (LIR) were in contact with the company in BC that manufactured these nets to determine proper construction and deployment methods.

LIR and NAS conducted the research in B.C. and Norway and conducted experimentation to determine the best mort retrieval method for local deep net cages. A prototype was developed and demonstrated. This prototype consisted of a pie shaped net bottom, fitted with a weighted funnel into which a "mort ring" settles. This model worked satisfactorily, however, it was required to pursue two other alternatives that would appear to have more efficient potential. Both these alternatives came from LIR observations in Norway and experimentation on the part of NAS and LIR. The first alternative involves utilizing a weighted pie shaped net bottom, without the funnel fitted to the bottom. It was believed by LIR and NAS that the "mort ring" would still seat properly on the cone created in the bottom of the net. Finally, as most of the nets in use here are of the grid bottom design, they attempted to center a weight in the middle of the cage bottom using support ropes and a mort ring in the center of the cage.
