For the second time in two years staff from the
Provincial Visitor Information Centres across the province visited the Coast of Bays. This
tour was part of a larger Central Newfoundland tour with stops on the Baie Verte
Peninsula, the Exploits Valley, and the Kittiwake Coast, Road to the Isles. The
purpose of these tours is to help familiarize the staff working in the visitor information
centres with what is available in different parts of the province. This in-turn will
assist them in informing visitors of various things to see and do in the different regions
of the province. Visitor Information Centre Staff included Nancy Penny (North Sydney),
Joan Wilson (Port aux Basque), Rita Glover (Notre Dame), Dale Halloway (Clarenville),
Kathleen Sheppard (Whitbourne) and Nick Dawe (St. Johns). Unlike last year when we
had the group for two nights, due to time constraints they were only in the Coast of Bays
for one night on this visit. This year's tour took place from June 19th, 2000
to June 23rd, 2000 and they were in the Coast of Bays on the 21st
and left on the 22nd.
Baxter House, the Coast of Bays Tourism Coordinator, met up with the group at Dashwoods
Service Centre and then proceeded to Harbour Breton. On arriving in Harbour Breton the
group visited Deadmans Cove, and though the fog had not quite lifted the group was
able to get an idea as to what the area offered. From here they went to Sunny Cottage
where they received a tour of the premises and enjoyed a feed of Pea Soup and Sandwiches.
Mayor Churance Rogers and Susy Baker joined the group for lunch. Pansy Blackmore provided
the guided tour. Having grown up in the house she was able to provide a very personal
touch, which was enjoyed by all. The visit to Sunny Cottage was arranged by Helen
Strickland, and with the help of a dedicated group of volunteers provided an excellent
meal.
At 2 PM the tour left Harbour Breton and proceeded to Belleoram. Here the group met up
with Mayor Steward May and toured the Municipal Centre and then walked to Cluett House.
The group was impressed with the landscape and the view of Iron Skull Mountain from the
Deck of the Municipal Centre.
English Harbour West was the next scheduled stop, and a visit to Petites Museum
and Yarn Point Knitters before heading back up the Coast. On the journey back the group
stopped into Jipujijkuel Kuespem Park where they met Gerard Joe and Fred Hinks (Park
Ranger). The group was informed about the services being provided by the park, including
sea kayak rentals and the trail being built around the pond.
By this time hunger was setting in so it was of to Dashwoods, where a delicious and
filling meal awaited. Joining us for supper was Marilyn John and Stan Hill - a personal
touch that was much appreciated by the tour group. After supper it was back to Conne River
where the group visited the PowWow site and concluded with a much-anticipated visit to the
Craft Shop. Day one almost completed, the tour group headed to St. Albans where they
enjoyed a comfortable stay at the St. Albans Inn.
