On Monday, January 18, staff of the Coast of Bays Corporation including Conrad Collier (IT Facilitator), Kim James (Youth Coordinator) and Baxter House (Tourism Coordinator) travelled to Rencontre East for a teacher inservice and an information session with the youth of the community. This was Baxter's first visit to the community and was examining the tourism potential of this part of the coast.
Conrad spent the day providing the teachers with an inservice on the use of the World Wide Web and its application as a teaching resource giving access to real time information. Conrad is also working with the school to develop a proposal which will see a Community Access Centre established at the school. This CAP site will allow local people access to the internet - a global community involved in commerce, technology and a sharing of ideas about social issues, health, leisure activities and education.
Kim met with the students of St. Stephen's School and gave a presentation about the economic potential of the region and the possibilities of sustainable employment in the remote community. Kim also encouraged the students to form a local chapter of a youth council through which they can have a voice in economic development in the Coast of Bays region. The Coast of Bays Board of Directors now have two non-voting youth representatives - Holly Vallis from English Harbour West and Miles Cornish from St. Alban's.
Kim will be doing presentations to youth groups and schools over the next two months followed by a regional youth forum. For more information about the youth councils, contact Kim at 709-538-3543, or 1-800-205-0799 or by e-mail at cobyc@cancom.net.
