On weekends, some people go to the cabin, others
go skiing and some go to a hotel to learn the process of planning a project and writing
the proposals to bring that project to completion. At least that's what the
representatives of ten of the fourteen municipalities in the Coast of Bays region did on
March 8 and 9. |
| This workshop was sponsored by the
Strategic Social Plan in partnership with the Coast of Bays Corporation and the Department
of Industry, Trade and Rural Development. On Friday evening, the people came together at
the Vancor Hotel to learn about the many sources of funding. Tracey Perry, the
Executive Director of the Coast of Bays Corporation, spoke about the role of the
Corporation, the economic development process and the relationship with municipalities.
Terry Head, Program Officer, and Chris Marsh, Team Leader, gave a presentation about the
various programs of Human Resource Development Canada. Gail Hoskins of the Department of
Industry, Trade and Rural Development gave a presentation on the programs and services of
the department that municipalities might avail of. This was followed by a
demonstration of the Community Services Council website at www.envision.ca, which contains an abundance of links to
various sources of funding and offers many resources for volunteer groups.
Dave Vardy of the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development then gave a
presentation on planning a project. Following this, the participants were formed
into working groups to decide on a project. Rob Kinden (Department of Industry,
Trade and Rural Development), Conrad Collier and Baxter House (Coast of Bays Corporation)
assisted with facilitating the working groups.
On Saturday morning, the working groups began the process of planning a project which
involved a SWOT analysis of the idea, deciding the team partners, identifying sources of
funding, permits required, developing timelines and planning for a divestiture. The
second part of the workshop discussed the various types of proposals, the components of a
proposal and some common mistakes made by persons developing proposals. The working
groups then produced an outline for a proposal which would see the development of a
component of the project. On Saturday afternoon, Mr. Vardy gave a presentation about
the evaluation process used by funding agencies when considering a proposal.
