On Saturday, September 18, another in the series of meetings was held in the Coast of
Bays region for the benefit of municipalities in the Exploits Valley Economic Development
and Coast of Bays regions. The meeting was chaired by Derm Flynn, Vice-President of the
NLFM and opened with greetings by Don Stewart (Chair, Coast of Bays), Don Stuckless
(Chair, Exploits Valley Economic Development Corporation), Rick Commerford (ACOA) and
Mayor Jerome Power of St. Alban's who brought greetings from the mayors of municipalities
in the Coast of Bays region. The gathering then enjoyed presentations by Conrad Collier of the Coast of Bays Corporation and Dave Curran of the Exploits Valley Economic Development Corporation discussing the opportunities, the ongoing economic activity and the plans of each REDB. A panel discussion followed with presentations by Marilyn Butland (Tourism), Harry Harding (Aquaculture/Fisheries), and Winston Jennings (Value-Added Manufacturing). Ms. Butland emphasized the importance of a good marketing strategy in promoting a region or event while Mr. Harding talked about Beothic Fisheries and the transitions they have made over the years to remain competitive and in business. Mr. Jennings then gave an overview of his experiences of setting up a business in the province - "not for the faint of heart and you must be committed!" He graciously provided the meeting with a sampling of various wines produced by his company, Weil Winery Ltd. in Twillingate. Their wines are made from blueberry, dogberry, damson, partridgeberry/apple, rhubarb, strawberry and strawberry/rhubarb. The afternoon consisted of break-out sessions to further discuss the topics of the morning presentations followed by a reporting of the points/issues raised. The meeting concluded with remarks from Mr. Carl Tessier who commented that there is much to be done in economic development, that municipalities have an important role to play and partnerships are key to success.
