legres.jpg (9138 bytes) On Wednesday, June 5, forty-one representatives of various organizations in the Coast of Bays region came together to discuss issues related to volunteering on boards and committees.  The workshop was co-sponsored by the Coast of Bays Corporation and the Central Region Steering Committee of the Strategic Social Plan.
Mr. Barry Fleming, a lawyer with the Human Rights Commission, volunteered his time to come out from St. John's to deliver this workshop.  In his presentation, Mr. Fleming discussed the importance of incorporation and the advantages of being registered as a charitable organization.

Throughout the workshop, participants discussed general circumstances experienced in their respective organizations and liability issues.  Mr. Fleming emphasized the importance of keeping accurate minutes of meetings as they become a legal document once they are adopted and signed.  In a legal action, the minutes are one of the first documents secured as evidence.

In closing, Mr. Fleming remarked that by attending this workshop does not mean that you can't or won't be sued. He went on to say that prudent conduct should prevent one from being successfully sued .
