In recognition of the need to work together to advance common concerns, the Coast of Bays Corporation and the Mayors of the various municipalities in this region have joined forces to establish a Joint Mayors Committee.

Strong leadership and co-operation are critical to the success of any economy.  In light of recent industrial challenges in the fishery, it is perhaps even more important than ever to identify innovative approaches that can sustain meaningful employment in the long term.

The Joint Mayors Committee meets four times a year to prioritize initiatives and issues affecting the region=s well being.  This year, efforts are being focused on the fishery, particularly the need to identify policy reforms that will enable rural remote coastal communities to survive without reliance on government.  Representation has been made to government regarding concerns with the pace of Aquaculture development, the Loan Guarantee Program, the new Waste Management Strategy, the condition of the roads, and the need for a Arural/remote@ development fund.

Invitations were extended to the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, as well as the executive of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities, to meet with the Mayors and Regional Board here in the Coast of Bays.  As a result of these meetings, the region has impressed upon the province the potential this area of the province has to offer - and the need for government to evaluate certain policies that are hindering our ability to move forward.  Work in this area is ongoing and it will no doubt take some time to effect the necessary changes.

Priorities over the next few months will focus on a regional position paper related to harvesting and processing in the fishery; continued growth of the aquaculture industry; as well as meetings with key government leaders related to waste management, local policing, tourism, mining and of course fisheries and aquaculture.  The partners will also respond to government=s discussion paper on an energy plan for the province, and how this region can be an important player.

On-going training is another critical component of a successful economy.  Volunteers of any organization, be it municipal governance or girl guides, must be aware of their legal liabilities.   In todays environment, accountability is not optional.  Knowledge of current government programs and approaches is also essential for community leaders.  Funding has been accessed to deliver a  Legal Liabilities workshop for councillors in the region, which will take place early in the new year.

The Coast of Bays Corporation is providing facilitation, proposal development and staffing support to the Joint Mayors Committee, and commends the leaders for their vision and willingness to work together for the greater good of this region.
