| From September 17 - 26, 1999, Tracey Perry, the
Executive Director of the Coast of Bays Corporation, joined with the Prime Minister, eight
premiers and a delegation of businesspersons from across Canada on a trade mission to
Japan. The mission gave Tracey the opportunity to network with many influential people
from across Canada and to promote the Coast of Bays region. She also participated in a
number of seminars which discussed such topics as how to do business in Japan, the various
consumer markets of Japan and the regulatory process to doing business there. While
in Japan, Tracey met with tour operators, fish brokers, people in the Information
Technology industry and others.
She learned that in order to entice Japanese tourists to visit our region we must
educate them about our aboriginal people and develop tourist attractions with a historical
or eco-tourism theme. The fish brokers certainly impressed upon the mission the need
for a top quality product to be accepted into the Japanese marketplace. The trip
also gave Tracey the opportunity to develop a relationship with the Trade
Commissioner at the Canadian Consulate in Tokyo which will be of future use.
