The annual Iron Skull Folk Festival was held in Belleoram on the weekend
of July 16 -19 with visitors from the Coast of Bays region, across the province, the
country and the United States. The festival began on Friday evening with over 700
people attending the opening performances which featured an impressive lineup of local and
visiting performers. The common ingredient in these performers was their love of
traditional Newfoundland music, storytelling and dance.
The sessions continued on Saturday afternoon followed by a pea soup supper hosted by
the local ACW and Fire Brigade. The community hall, which was set up to accomodate in
excess of a hundred settings, was filled many times over. The same was experienced for the
breakfast settings.
The evening began with a performance by the Burin Heritage Square Dancers and the music
and song continued into the early morning hours of Sunday. Sunday morning heard the
hillsides come alive with the sound of Gospel music. The afternoon session again was
attended by an energetic, enthusiastic crowd who was treated to a continued traditional
Newfoundland experience.
