| During the weekend of May 25 - 27, Rosabelle Goods of
Hermitage and Gordon Hatfield of Milltown represented the Coast of Bays at the Global
Vision/Junior Team Canada seminar in St. John's. This seminar provided the
participants an opportunity to hear first hand what types of careers are available in the
global market place as well as the skills and experience needed to tap into these jobs.
The participants were also invited to compete for a spot on the Global Vision
summer program to Southeast Asia. Rosabelle Goods said, "it was a great learning
experience on how to begin and continue operations in an international marketplace."
Throughout the weekend a
number of presentations and lectures were carried out by EDC representatives
including Norm Hotchkiss. Apart form EDC, they also learned about business in
the international marketplace through presentations by students from MUN and they also did
a case study that was later addressed by MUN professor Herb MacKenzie.
They were also given the opportunity to meet with many Newfoundland business
representatives from NewTel, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. There were also people from
the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency who spoke about their role in assisting
entrepreneurs enter the global marketplace.
Following a luncheon they went to the Newfoundland and Labrador Manufacturers Trade
Show which also provided the opportunity to meet with various business people. The
seminars ended with groups making a presentation to a board of judges. The
presentations were prepared during the participant's spare time throughout the two days
and were to present a new product/service that the groups would introduce and sell to an
international marketplace. There were ideas ranging from Mail Order Brides to
inflatable toilets.Overall, it was an enjoyable three days and a great learning experience
for all. |
