| The Coast of Bays Youth Council held its FAM Tour
2000 on Saturday, June 3. The day began early with a tour of the Newfoundland and
Labrador Hydro Generating Station at Bay D'Espoir. Operators Matt Collier and Dwayne
Fowler gave a detailed tour and explanation of the process and the importance of the
facility to the power grid of the province. Then it was off to the fish hatchery to talk
about salmonids with Anthony Willcott. Next on the agenda was Sim Savoury's music studio
in Belleoram. Duane demonstrated his singing talents and Sim tried
to make him sound good using computers and mixing boards. After a lunch at Angela's
Place in English Harbour West, the tour took them to SWC Productions where Bud Davidge
showed how casstettes are filled, and mass duplications of cassettes and CDs are made.
A drive to Hermitage brought them to SeaCraft Ltd., a local company that has developed
a Rapid Expandable Modular Moulding System (REMMS) for building fibreglas vessels.
Wallace and Cathy Roberts were very happy to share their experiences with the
youth and answer their questions.
Harbour Breton was the last stop on the tour which would continue on Day 2. Before the
close of Day 1 the group attended a Buddy
Wasisname and the Other Fellers performanace at the Connaigre Arena. Following
the performance, they were invited to the dressing room to meet the trio and to get their
autographs.
Day 2 began with a a tour of Sunny Cottage. Pansy Blackmore, who grew up in the
house, added a personal touch to the tour and was a treasure chest of stories. The
tour ended with a tour of the new Connaigre Peninsula Health Care Centre. Junior
took the group to every corner of this $10 million modern state of the art facility which
is scheduled to open in September 2000.
This tour gave the youth an insight into some of the activities happening in the Coast
of Bays region and the opportunities that exist right here at home.
