In November 2000, the Coast of Bays Corporation Education subcommittee
sponsored an essay writing contest open to students of Levels 1, 2 and 3 in the region.
The contest had three main purposes: 1. To allow the youth of the region express their
vision of the Coast of Bays
2. To be a learning experience. In researching material for this essay, we hoped that
the students would identify opportunities for development allowing them to return to the
Coast of Bays to live and work, and
3. To create an awareness of the good things that are happening around us, the quality
of life that we take for granted and how lucky we are to be able to live here.
The prizes offered for the contest were $200 for first place, $150 for second place and
$100 for third place.
There were eight entries from King Academy in Harbour Breton and John Watkins Academy
in Hermitage. All entries were assigned a reference number to ensure anonymity before
being sent to the panel of judges.
We would like to express thanks to our judges that included Baxter House, Coast of Bays
Tourism Coordinator, Clyde Collier, member of the Coast of Bays Board of Directors and
Tony Grimes of the College of the North Atlantic. The winners were announced just
before the Christmas holidays and the winning essays will be published in the Coaster
over the next three weeks. In addition, the top three essays are available for reading
here on the Coast of Bays website. Congratulations to all for an excellent effort.
The first place essay was written by Troy Rideout of John Watkins Academy in
