This is how it's done...

On Saturday, March 2, the Coast of Bays office of the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development and the South Coast Community Development Corporation co-hosted a Craft Development Workshop at Regional Resource Centre.

Craftspersons from around the Coast of Bays region came together to share experiences and ideas.  The Coast of Bays region is rich in talent.  Our artisans use a variety of media including wood, driftwood, wool, bone, stone, flowers and cloth.

The day began with presentations by Gail Hoskins (ITRD), Conrad Collier (Coast of Bays Corporation), Juanita Organ (South Coast Community Development Corporation) and Heather Thistle (Newfoundland and Labrador Organization for Women Entrepreneurs -NLOWE).

After a mini-exhibition and discussions about techniques used in various crafts, Pete Barrett, a craft specialist with the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, gave presentations and facilitated discussions about marketing and market research.   The group also discussed the importance of maintaining quality control.

At the end of the day there was a discussion to identify future workshops for the region that would serve to give the craft industry in the Coast of Bays region an edge on the competition from other parts of the province and the country.
