At a luncheon hosted by the Kittiwake Coast Tourism
Association and Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador, Chief Misel Joe of Conne River was
presented with the Ambassador of Hospitality Award. In her remarks, Ms.
Kelly-Blackmore, President of Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador, spoke of the pride
she feels whenever she sees a performance by the Conne River drummers and dancers.
She also spoke of the efforts of everyone in Conne River during the annual Powwow that makes that event a memorable one for visitors to
the area. Chief Joe was also commended for working to ensure the longevity of the
Micmac language and traditions.
Chief Joe, in his acceptance speech, noted that we can achieve much when
we all work together toward a common goal. We can capitalize on the uniqueness of
our cultures and improve our economies in the process. Last year, in addition to the
regular Powwow, the people of Conne River organized a mini-powow for the benefit of ninety
passengers visiting the community from the cruiseship, "Le
Levant". In 2004, the people of Conne River will be re-establishing a
historical relationship with the people of Saint Pierre et Miquelon. To celebrate
this, Chief Joe and his people are planning to trek to the island by birch bark canoe.
While there, they will hold a mini-powwow and craft exhibition. |
