Preparing for the social

On Friday, February 18, the people of Belleoram, provincial and federal politicians as well as others from the Coast of Bays region gathered at the community centre in Belleoram for its official opening.

Mayor Stewart May welcomed everyone to the event and gave a chronological description of how the community centre developed from a dream to reality.  He pointed out that it was the combined efforts of the local residents through volunteer labour, the Iron Skull Folk Festival organizers, the Municipal Council, Hon. Oliver Langdon, MHA, and the Hon. Bill Matthews, MP that made this facility happen.  He also pointed out the important role of Human Resources Development Canada in the process. Mayor May also stated that the facility is assessed at $750,000 .

Deputy Mayor Lenus Lawrence brought greetings from the neighbouring town of St. Jacques-Coomb's Cove and congratulated the people of Belleoram on their achievement.

MHA Oliver Langdon congratulated the Town of Belleoram and said that this facility is what can be achieved anywhere in rural Newfoundland and Labrador with leadership, determination and the development of partnerships.  MP Bill Matthews, too commended the community and extended his full support for the future.

The Community Centre is home to the Belleoram Community Access Centre, Town of Belleoram Community Council, the Belleoram Citizen's Library, Belleoram Community Cable TV, the Belleoram Community Centre, Department of Health - Continuing Care and the Provincial Court Circuit.

Following the formalities everyone enjoyed a social followed by a dance. The celebrations continued on through the weekend with dances, movies and other activities for the whole community.
