A Discussion in Progress

On Saturday, the participants from the shellfish and finfish sectors came together for day of general sessions.  The day began with a welcome by Mayor Bertram Strickland of St. Alban's and addresses by the Hon. Oliver Langdon, MHA, Fortune Bay - Cape LaHune and Bill Matthews, MP, Burin - St. George's.  Tracey Perry and Churence Rogers, Chairs of the forum, then gave a recap of the previous day's activities and discussions.

The first presenter for the day was Wayne Long of Scotiaview Seafood Inc. who gave a detailed explanation of the dynamics affecting world seafood prices.  Dr. Brian Glebe then spoke about how best to achieve increased profits in the aquaculture industry.

At the luncheon, the Hon. Gerry Reid, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, talked about the importance of the aquaculture industry to the provincial economy.  He also talked about the advantages that the south coast of the province has for aquaculture development as compared to the norther coasts of the province.   Minister Reid pointed out that more of our educated youth need to look at opportunities in aquaculture at home before heading off to mainland Canada and the USA to work in similar industries.

Johnathon Moir, North Atlantic Sea Farms Ltd., gave a presentation on cod farming and their plans for the region over the next five years.  He talked about the opportunities in that sector as well the economics as compared with other finfish aquaculture markets. This was followed by Dave Conley of DC Conley and Associates, who gave an indepth discussion of the importance of communications to dispel myths about the aquaculture industry and to avoid conflicts with other users of the marine environment. Nell Halse, of the New Brunswick Salmon Growers Association, posed the question of whether aquaculturists are 'framers' or 'fishers' and gave an insightful presentation of the similarities and the differences and how these interpretations affect policies and regulations pertaining to the industry.
