The Chair delivers his Annual Report
|
The Coast of Bays Corporation held its Annual General Meeting
on Tuesday, September 16, at the Harbour Breton Lions Club with approx. fifty people in
attendance including Hon. Oliver Langdon, MHA for the area, Gail
Hoskins of the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development,
Max Taylor, Chair of the South Coast Community Development
Corporation, Terry Head of Human Resources Development Canada, Scott Dawe of
ACOA and Wendy Hounsell, central region coordinator of FINALY!. Mr. Don Stewart, Chairman, opened
the meeting by welcoming everyone to the AGM and thanking the Board of Directors and staff
for their commitment to economic development in the Coast of Bays region over the past
year. He then gave an overview of the work of the Corporation over the
past year. Of particular notice was the work done to secure funding
for the development of the Coast of Bays Arts
and Exploration Centre. Tracey Perry, Executive Director, gave a presentation of the workplan
for the coming year which includes a Human Resources Development plan
for the region and the initial steps to developing a Coastal Zone
Management Plan for the region. Earlier in the evening, a meeting of
the Board of Directors was held to elect the new executive for
2003-04. Mr. Stewart then introduced the executive who takes office
effective immediately following the AGM. They are Don

| (Chairperson), Steward May
(Vice-Chair), Linwood Hunt (Treasurer) and Stan Hill
(Secretary). Mr. Stewart then introduced the new Board members -
Sheldon Hynes (At-Large) and Phoebe Keeping-Foster (Conne
River). Frances Kealey continues to represent the Bay D'Espoir
business community for 2003-04..
Cpl. Jeff Christie of the Harbour Breton detachment of the RCMP
spoke about the importance of working with youth in the area. He
noted the excellent community partnerships that have been fostered
with such groups as the Community Youth Network in Harbour Breton. He also talked
about the benefits of having youth from the region participate in the
Youth Leadership Program in Ottawa.
The Hon. Oliver Langdon acknowledged the work of the
ex-officio resource people from the various federal and provincial
departments and agencies. He said that these kinds of working
relationships are necessary to make things happen in economic
development. After a few questions from the audience, the
meeting was adjourned and a networking session was held to complete
the AGM. |
