The Coast of Bays Corporation held its Annual General meeting on June 5 at the Lions Club in English Harbour West. About fifty people turned out for the meeting including general members, the Board of Directors, ex-officio members, staff and special guests including Mr. Don Hollett of ACOA, Mr. Bruce Moore of HRDC and Mr. Percy Farwell of the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development.

The evening began with an introduction of the 2000-2001 Board members followed by the Chairman, Mr. Don Stewart, tabling the Chair's report which outlined in great detail the activities of the Board during the past year.  He thanked the Board for their support and committment to the region, the people who served on various subcommittees, the ex-officio members for their assistance and commended the staff on a job well done.

This was followed by a presentation by Ms. Tracey Perry, Executive Director, who outlined the five core functions of the Regional Economic Development Board (REDB).

She reiterated that the main role of the Corporation is one of planning and creating a climate for development.  Implementation of the Strategic Economic Plan is done by other groups and organizations in the region - municipal councils, economic development committees, harbour authorities, development associations, etc.

She also pointed out the priorities of the Board and discussed some planned activities for the coming year.  This was followed by a question and answer period.

Mr. John Vallis then assumed interim chairmanship of the meeting to conduct the election of the executive of the Board for the coming year.  After many nominations and a vote, the executive for 2001-2002 were elected as follows:

  • Don Stewart - Chair
  • Steward May - Vice-Chair
  • Richard Ingram - Secretary
  • Berkley Loveless - Treasurer
