The Coast of Bays Corporation held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, June 8, at the St. Alban's Lions Club with fifty people in attendance including Mr. Kevin Aucoin of the Department of Development and Rural Renewal, Mr. Doug Phelan of ACOA and Terry Head of Human Resources and Development Canada.

The Chair, Mr. Don Stewart, opened the meeting by welcoming everyone to the AGM and thanking the Board of Directors and staff for their commitment to economic development in the Coast of Bays region over the past year. Mr. Stewart then pointed out the role of the Regional Economic Development Board (REDB) in creating a climate for socio-economic development in the region and emphasized that everyone has a role to play in the process. He gave a detailed listing of the initiatives of the Coast of Bays Corporation over the past year.

The Treasurer, Ms. Bridget Kelly, then tabled the financial report for the year and circulated printed copies to the meeting. This was followed by an energetic presentation by the Executive Director, Ms. Tracey Perry, who spoke about the opportunities that exist in our region, the setbacks and obstacles that can be expected and the need for determination and a positive attitude to ensure success. The meeting then discussed revisions to the by-laws regarding the Board structure and the suggestion that new board members be in place prior to the AGM to enable them to participate in the AGM executive election process.

The Chair of the meeting was then handed over to Mr. Jeff Gillam of the South Coast Community Development Corporation to conduct the election process for the Executive of the Board of Directors for the coming year. The results of this process are as follows: Don Stewart - Chair, Max Taylor - Vice-Chair, Bridget Kelly - Secretary and Gordon Kearley - Treasurer.

Kevin Aucoin, Regional Manager, Department of Development and Rural Renewal, then addressed the meeting. He spoke briefly about the activities of the REDBs in central Newfoundland. He also indicated that the Post-TAGS program would be initiated within the next few weeks and that the focus of this funding will be for major initiatives resulting in long term sustainable employment.

In Other Business, there was a discussion of the need for access to timber stands in areas that are now closed and more forest access roads. As well, there was a discussion of how a "daily bag limit" on the Rainbow Trout catch would benefit tourism related businesses in the area. Mr. Jeff Gillam of the South Coast Community Development Corporation congratulated the Coast of Bays Corporation on a very busy, productive and successful year and extended best wishes for another such year. The AGM concluded with a social for the attendees.
