Aquaculture in the
Coast of Bays region is a multi-million dollar industry with established
markets and exciting investment potential. The marine
environment of the Coast of Bays is perfect for farming several species
of shellfish and finfish. Sheltered bays, inlets and freshwater lakes
offer protected areas for cages and suspended gear culture. The region
also has the warmest marine water temperatures in the Province.
With these excellent aquatic conditions, the region is home to a
thriving scallop hatchery, producing a consistent supply of scallop seed
that enhances scallop-farming province-wide. As well, there is
consistent and reliable mussel seed collection and many sites that are
ideal for culturing shellfish.
The region also boasts the largest commercial salmonid hatchery in
the province. Millions of steelhead trout and thousands of Atlantic
salmon are hatched annually; then on-grown at marine farms throughout
the Coast of Bays.
Not only does the Coast of Bays offer a wealth of aquatic resources,
but its strategic geographic location also gives an advantage for
trading with Iceland, the European Union and the French islands of St.
Pierre and Miquelon. The Gander International Airport affords
aquaculture companies a fast and efficient channel to international
markets.
Infrastructure for this industry is excellent, with many supplies and
services locally available and produced. Our superior environmental
conditions, availability of expertise and strong support services make
the climate ripe for continued growth. Aquaculture spins off support
industries such as secondary processing, diving, composting and feed
production that offer significant potential for develoment. An open
invitation is extended to entrepreneurs to invest in this flourishing
industry.
